Artwork for Label Printing
If you are just getting involved with label printing or are considering outsourcing your label printing needs to a professional, you have probably already encountered a few industry-specific terms with which you may not be entirely familiar. One such term is “artwork.” Artwork is completely unrelated to your favorite museum pieces and does not necessarily refer to “graphical” elements, either. Let us look at what artwork for label printing is all about.
In the simplest of terms, artwork refers to the layout of a label’s design. That includes factors such as the actual words used (referred to as the “copy”) and any images that might be involved in the design, as well. In essence, the artwork for label printing is the complete “look” of the label, including all of its components. Artwork is finalized prior to the label printing company’s creation of printing plates or negatives.
Depending upon the label printing company with whom you work, artwork may be your responsibility, their responsibility, or a joint effort. In all cases, the label printing firm should provide you with samples, or mock-ups, of your labels before turning the artwork into a final product.

Address Lables - Useful Tips
Making address labels for letters and parcels can be a real chore. It’s something that has stood in the way of all sorts of people, whether they are large-scale eBay sellers or simply office workers who need to post a big batch of letters.
What you might not have realised, though, is that making address labels can be easy when you know how. The best way to do it is to compose your letters using a Mail Merge function in the first place, such as the one that comes with Microsoft Word. This means that your addresses are being stored not in the documents themselves, but in either a spreadsheet or a database. The documents then contain a ‘field’, which is a special area where the program knows the address should go.
Once you have split your addresses from your documents in this way, you should find it much easier to make address labels. All you need to do is open a page and insert a lot of address fields, with a ‘next record’ field in between each one to tell the software not to put in the same address twice. Word has a wizard to help you do this: just go to the File menu, then New, and then choose ‘Mailing Label Wizard’ from under ‘Letters and Faxes’. Point it to your database, and you should be good to go.
The final step in making address labels is a physical one. Sure, you’ve got your fancy software that can make mailing labels, but unless you want to cut the addresses out from pieces of paper and use tape or glue, you’re also going to need to get some sticky labels and put them in your printer. You can obviously find them at any good office supplies or stationery store, but make sure to get a size that Word knows about, so it can lay the labels out correctly for you. You can check the label sizes Word has available in the last stage of the Mailing Label Wizard, after you point it to your database – don’t worry too much, though, as few manufacturers will bother to make labels in a size incompatible with Word.

Equipments necessary for starting a business in the production of labels
The labels cover a large range of products for which they are destined, and this determines the existence of several types of label creation according to the type of printing used.
From the point of view of the printing type used, the labels are of two types: self-adhesive labels which, when packing the products , are taken from the roll, where is used printing on the flexographic machine and the non-self-adhesive labels where the offset printing equipments are used.
For creating the labels using the flexographic printing, first of all, you must acquire a technological line of flexographic plates fabrication , the most indicated being a computer to plate system which transposes the files processed by pre-press directly on the photopolymer plate.
The flexographic printing machine is also necessary, printing the labels with a number of at least 6 groups of colour, and with the optimal maximum printing format chosen in such a manner that, according to the estimations made initially, it ensures a maximum productivity. The flexographic printing machine must have attached upon elimination all the components which allow the achievement of all the necessary finishing: UV varnishing, die-cutting, metallic foil stamping.
For the labels achieved with sheetfed printing, first of all it is necessary to include in the investment plan the sheetfed printing press with at least 6 groups of color and with the maximum print format dimensioned according to the estimates resulted from the market study made before the investment begins.
As for any other sheetfed printing , a guillotine is also necessary, with the maximum opening in accordance with the format of the printing machine, the range of formats which can be cut at this type of equipment must be as large as possible, to be able to reach minimum formats which are as little as possible. It is very important that guillotine be programmable as regards the formats of label which it can cut, because there is increased productivity.
If in the last group, the printing machine cannot ensure the UV varnishing, it is very important to have an UV varnishing equipment at least separately. We can either choose special equipment for this, or an adaptation formed from a classic sheetfed printing machine which lacks the humidification and an UV drying equipment which is placed at the machine elimination.
Also regarding the labels achieved with a sheetfed printing, a metallic foil stamping equipment which can be automatic, semiautomatic or manual according to the dimensions chosen for the business, will be also necessary . For the processing of labels which don’t have a rectangular form, a tunnel puncher whose maximum dimension of processing must be chosen according to the target market that we refer to.

High speed print & apply
A company has launched a high speed print and apply solution for variable information labelling.
The ALX 720 is suited to the print and application of information such as pricing, ladder or picket fence barcodes, stock numbers, batch codes and general promotional labelling.
It prints and applies up to 250 labels a minute, depending on label size, and has a label stop accuracy of ± 0.5mm.
The system uses the latest thermal transfer, near edge, 300dpi print head technology to produce high resolution output in a choice of 17 fonts, including OCR/A and OCR/B, as well as two scaleable fonts. Digitised drawings and logos can be imported for incorporation in print designs.
Applying labels to the top, sides and base of a variety of cartons, containers, packages and products, the ALX 720 prints at speeds of up to 300mm per second and labels at speeds of up to 30 metres/min.
The company says that, unlike 1:1 print and apply systems – where label application is limited by print speed – the ALX 720 has a label buffer between the print head and dispensing edge. This, it says, enables greater flexibility and optimum speeds to be achieved at both print and apply stages.
The unit features the company’s automatic product speed following technology as standard. This ensures accurate labelling through the continuous monitoring and automatic adjustment of the labelling speed to much product presentation to the labelling edge, says the manufacturer. Print and dispense functions are controlled through individual membrane keypads, located on the front of the cabinet, with system status visible on integral LED displays.
The control system incorporates 1 Mb of dynamic RAM memory as standard, with an RS 232 serial interface also included. This enables print data to be generated and controlled from a linked PC, mini or mainframe computer system if required. An optional RS 485 interface is also available.
